Leetta Douglas is a visual artist whose work explores the intersection of raw emotion and personal history. Her journey began at eighteen with a scholarship to the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, where she first began balancing the energy of abstract expressionism with the quiet, focused observation of portraiture.
In the 1980s, Leetta’s work became a staple of the Houston art scene. Her abstract watercolors and dyes were chosen to bring color and a sense of calm to professional and medical spaces throughout the city. While her early career was informed by a background in architectural design, her current studio practice has evolved into a more fluid style she describes as "controlled freedom."
Today, Leetta’s abstract works are a study in movement and texture, primarily rendered in acrylic on canvas and watercolor ink dye on paper. Moving away from traditional methods, she often utilizes unconventional tools to create pieces that feel both spontaneous and intentional. Her current abstracts are defined by bold, swept-on forms and intricate detail—capturing moments of high energy and quiet reflection on the same surface.
In her portrait series, which she labels as Representative Art, Leetta moves from the abstract into the deeply personal. These works—created with acrylic and colored pencil on paper—focus heavily on self-portraiture, a tradition she uses to document a life and explore broader human experiences.
Her current collection of representative art is deeply rooted in memory, specifically inspired by a trip to Cancun with friends. These pieces function as a visual diary of that time, capturing the light and the connections of the shared experience as a lasting record of the human spirit.
